Frequently asked
+ – How do I add books?
Share a file into Nightjar from another app, pick files or a whole folder from the device, drop them into the Nightjar folder in Finder or Files on iOS, send them from a computer over Wi-Fi, or paste a direct link to a file of your own. You can also point the app at the top of a collection and let it walk the folder tree. A ZIP archive you share, pick, send over Wi-Fi or link to is unpacked on the device and imported like a folder.
+ – Which files can I play?
MP3, M4B, M4A, AAC, WAV and FLAC play directly. Matroska files (.mka, .mkv) are repacked on import, without re-encoding, and ZIP archives are unpacked. OGG and Opus are not supported, because iOS cannot decode them natively, and neither are DRM-protected files such as Audible AA and AAX. The full list is on the home page.
+ – How do I connect Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive or a WebDAV server?
Network sources are part of Nightjar Pro. Open Sources, choose the service and sign in on its own sign-in page. Dropbox and OneDrive give Nightjar a folder of its own, Apps/Nightjar, and nothing else — put your books there. Google Drive works through Google’s file picker: you choose the files, and Nightjar can open only those. WebDAV servers work too — Nextcloud, Yandex Disk, pCloud, Koofr, Icedrive, Box, Synology and more — just enter the server address and your login; the server has to be able to send a file in pieces, as popular servers do, and Nightjar tells you if yours cannot. Some providers (Yandex Disk, Box) want an app password generated in their account settings, not your main account password. Passwords and sign-in tokens are stored in the platform’s secure storage on the device, the server address and user name in the app’s library database; none of it is sent to us.
+ – What does Pro include, and how do I restore a purchase?
Pro adds network sources — Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive and WebDAV — with offline downloads from them, and eight more themes; the player, every local way of importing and Wi-Fi transfer are free. It comes as a monthly or yearly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase, with a 7-day free trial. A purchase belongs to your App Store or Google Play account: after a reinstall or on a new device signed in to the same account, tap “Restore purchases” in Settings → Nightjar Pro to get Pro back. Purchases do not carry over between iOS and Android. Subscriptions are managed and cancelled in your store account.
+ – Does it download the whole book before playing?
No. The app downloads only the part you are listening to, so a long book starts in seconds, and it keeps what you have already heard. If you want a whole book available offline — on a plane, say — download it explicitly from the book menu.
+ – A book says it needs conversion. Why?
Matroska files (.mka, .mkv) have to be repacked before chapters and seeking work reliably. Nightjar creates the book right away and converts it on demand — from the book menu, or automatically when you download it for offline listening.
+ – Playback stops when the screen is off on Android.
Some vendors kill background audio aggressively. Exclude Nightjar from battery optimisation in the system settings; the exact wording differs between manufacturers.
+ – Where is my listening progress kept, and can I back it up?
Progress lives in a database on the device. Nightjar keeps daily local backups and lets you export, share or restore one from Settings. Audio files themselves are not part of a backup. When you move to a new Android phone with the system’s transfer tool, the library, progress and downloaded books come along; sign in to your cloud accounts again on the new phone.
+ – How do I turn crash reporting off?
The app asks about diagnostics the first time you open it and collects nothing before you answer. Whatever you choose, you can change it later in Settings → Privacy. There are no ads in the app, and no analytics, attribution or measurement SDKs.
